Foxtrot

We’ve previously established in this blog challenge that I am a failed actress. Dancing is another fine arts skills which I lack, the difference being that I never really tried to be a dancer. While I spent plenty of time on stage and on horseback as child, I never went to the jazz and tap dance lessons that it seems are required of every school age girl in the country. I didn’t feel like I was missing out. Sure, the square dancing in elementary school gym class was fun, but that was enough for me.

However, now as an adult, I would love to take dance lessons – ballroom dance, swing dance, Latin dance. I’m not out for a Dirty Dancing or Dancing with the Stars or Save the Last Dance experience. I would just like to have a modicum of ability in something that it seems even less than 100 years ago was a staple of an American upbringing. I just want a couple of moves at my disposal to use at weddings and festivals and holiday parties.

Unfortunately, my partner won’t take classes with me. He’s too embarrassed. He says he feels silly because he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Of course, that’s the point of being in the class. We wouldn’t be going if we already had the foxtrot and the rumba steps locked down. But I can understand where he’s coming from. I’m a perfectionist too and get embarrassed about not being able to do something, even in a place where I’m not supposed to know how. I especially about things that I don’t really want to do.

So for now, the two of us and our four left feet will stay on the sidelines, gripping onto rocks glasses and engaging in conversation so deeply that no one dare interrupt to suggest we head out to the dance floor. He will be perfectly content with that situation but I will be looking longingly out of the corner of my eye at the people up enjoying the band.

What else are people writing in the A to Z Blog Challenge? Check out today’s featured blog, sponsored by the letter F: Fashion’s Sense. I love this A-Z theme idea of “Apparel Construction”. I don’t sew or make my own clothes, but I love the idea of this and I always like learning new words, so I’ll be reading each post eagerly.

  1. For years I have been trying to master the Running Man and the Roger Rabbit (I’m probably dating myself here) but no success. It’s probably for the best considering its not 1992 anymore.

  2. Visiting from the A-Z today. I’m your neighbor at #110 : ) I love to dance, but am just okay. My husband is an excellent dancer though, so he pulls me along and it works. I do not have his natural rhythm, but I dance anyway. Good luck with the alphabet!

  3. I would love to know how to dance in relevant social situations. Sometimes I even long for the days of gym class square dancing too though. Thank you for that fun reminder!
